Alfred was born in July 1898 to Charles Withers Nightingale and his wife Annie of 23 Broxton Road, Wallasey, Cheshire. He was educated at Mound Radford Street School, Exeter. On 12th October 1915, aged 17, he entered Manchester University to study Gas Chemical Technology. He may have served for a time with the Royal Naval Division. He was killed in Greece in June 1918 when the aircraft, a Sopwith F1. Camel, he was in lost control and crashed into the sea at Mudros harbour in a spinning nose dive. He left effects worth £600 to his father.
