Robert was born in 1893 at Pendleton to Thomas Reid, a manufacturer. He was educated at Gardner Street School, Pendleton and Salford Technical School. He was a clerk with the bank Comptoir National D’Escompte de Paris, Manchester. From November 1915 to January 1916 he was a member of the University Officer Training Corps. He was gazetted in May 1916, served as a Brigade Signalling Officer, and was awarded a Military Cross. His brigadier reported that Robert was shot through the heart and died on reaching a dressing station near Bucquoy, Bapaume, in March 1918. He left effects worth £268 to his father.
