Edward was born in 1893 at Church, near Accrington, elder son of James, a cashier and Elizabeth Annie Cunliffe of Higher Broughton Manchester. Educated at Manchester Central School, he entered Manchester University in 1911 to study textiles, and in 1914 gained Certificate of Technology (Textile Industries). He was an emergency member of the University Officer Training Corps, and was gazetted in October 1914 to 16th Bn. Lancashire Fusiliers. He later transferred to the 37th Machine Gun Corps. He died in Belgium in March 1918 and left effects worth £387 2s 1d to his father. His younger brother James Grimshaw Cunliffe, a Captain in the Army, was killed on 1st August 1917 in Flanders. Their brother Richard Grimshaw Cunliffe, MSc Technology (1905) served in France as a Lieutenant, survived the War and died in Middlesex in January 1934. They had a sister called Gladys.
