Ernest was the second son of a Post Office worker from Miles Platting. He attended the local school, Nelson Municipal Secondary and was employed as a shipping clerk. From November to Decemeber 1915 he was a member of the University Officer Training Corps. In 1916 he gained a commission with the Manchester Regiment and served in Gallipoli and on the Western Front. He was killed in action near St. Quentin in March 1918, while attached to the Royal Berkshire Regiment. He left effects worth £497 16s to Albert Whitworth Knott, a stationer.
