Samuel was born in 1890 to Reverand Samuel F. and Mary Rushforth Collier, their eldest son. Educated at Bickerton House School, Southport and Manchester Grammar School, he was employed as a buyer at Messrs. Tootal, Broadhurst, Lee & Co. He enlisted in September 1914, along with his brothers, with the 6th Battalion Manchester Regiment and commissioned with that battalion in late October 1914. He was killed at Servacue Farm in France in March 1918. He left effects worth £519 19s 7d to his parents. Sadly, his youngest brother Sidney was killed just a few days later.
