David was the son of David and Clara Elizabeth Clarke of Stretford. He was born in 1897 and attended Manchester Central School. He was a member of the University Officer Training Corps from April 1916 to October 1916 and then joined the 3rd Battalion Cheshire Regiment as an officer. He spent some time with a number of other battalions – 16th, 11th and 13th (Entrenching) during his service on the Western Front. He was killed at La Fere Wood, near St. Quentin in March 1918.
