Arthur was born to Walter, a solicitor with Messrs Ascroft, Maw and Shimeld, and Lucy Maw of Oldham in 1890. Educated at Hulme Grammar School, Oldham he entered Manchester University in 1907 to study architecture. When war broke out he was an architect with Taylor and Simster of Oldham. He was gazetted on 1st December 1914 to 2nd/10th Manchester Regiment, served on the Western Front and died near St. Quentin in March 1918. Arthur left effects worth £543 0s 3d to his father.
