Henry was born in 1893, son of Fred and Mary Jane Leater, of 41, Broad St., Rhodes, Manchester. As an apprentice with I. Levinstein, Chemical Manufacturers of Blackley, Manchester at age 17 he enrolled as an Evening Student on Science Courses at the Tech for the 1909-10 academic session and continued for the next three years by which time he was a dyer’s assistant. He was served on the Western Front and was Mentioned in Despatches.
