John was the son of Joseph and Sarah Jane Carefull of Claughton, Birkenhead. He was born in 1892 and educated at St. Silas School, Toxeth, St. Andrews H.G.S., Birkenhead and Oulton Secondary School. He was a clerk with H.W. Lighthouse, a timber broker. From November 1915 to January 1916 he was a member of the University Officer Training Corps. He was killed in March 1918 near St. Quentin. He left effects woth £297 18s to his mother.
