John was born in 1895 to Frederick William, a cotton manufacturer, and Helen Brindle. He was educated at Shrewsbury School, where he was a member of the army cadets, and entered Manchester University in 1913 to study Textile Industries. He was gazetted into 4th Battalion Loyal North Lancashires after being in the Chorley Territorials since 1912. He was wounded at Festubert in May 1915 and promoted to Captain in September that year. He contracted tuberculosis and died at a sanatorium in Scotland in March 1918. His father was Captain and second in command of the 12th Battalion Lancashire Volunteers. He left effects worth £1207 0s 4d to his parents and sister Aldwyth.
