Gerald was born at Brinnington, Stockport, 3rd August 1893 to John James, a solicitor, and Elizabeth Emily Sidebotham. He attended Haileybury School, Hertford. In 1910, while articled with his father’s firm, he entered Manchester University. He graduated in 1917 with an L.L.B.
Gerald was a member of the University Officer Training Corps from January 1913 until he was gazetted in August 1914. He was wounded in the wrist at Suvla Bay, Gallipoli in August 1915 and on recovery went to Egypt and later Palestine where he was killed by Turkish machine gun fire north of Jerusalem in March 1918. His elder brother, John Frith Sidebotham, was killed in action in February 1916. He left effects worth £1130 6s 3d to his father.
