John was born in 1881 at West Didsbury to Surgeon Major G.H. Darwin, medical officer of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway. He attended Manchester Grammar School and entered Manchester University in 1910. After his studies he became a clerk for the same company as his father.
John was a member of the University Officer Training Corps from July 1915 to September 1915. He served with the Manchester Regiment, but most of his time was spent attached to the 2nd/5th Warwickshire Regiment. He died in hospital in Germany, a prisoner of war, in December 1917 of wounds he received during the Battle of Cambrai. He left effects worth £74 7s 3d to his wife Florence Livesey Darwin with whom he had had a son.
