Bertram was born in 1895 at Hindley Green, Wigan to William Henry and Emma Bloy. He was educated at Hindley and Abram Grammar School and entered Manchester University in 1914 to study music. He was a Hargreaves Exhibitioner and obtained his intermediate music bachelors in 1915. He played the organ at St. John’s Church, Hindley Green.
Having joined the University Officer Training Corps in October 1915 Bertram left the unit in February 1916 to enlist in the ranks of the 19th London Regiment. He went to the western front in August 1916 and was for a time he was attached to the 7th Battalion. He died in hospital as a result of injuries from a gas shell explosion on 1st December 1917.
Bertram’s older brother, Laurence, of the Lancashire Fusiliers, was killed in 1916.
