William was the son of Henry Leigh of Bury. He was born in 1890, educated at Walshaw Church of England School and Bury Secondary School, and entered Manchester University in 1908. He graduated in 1913 and became an assistant master at Bow Green School in Kent. He was married to a lady called Lena.
William enlisted in November 1915, was gazetted in August 1917 to the Lancashire Fusiliers. He transferred to The Loyal North Lancashire Regiment and was serving with them when he was killed near Cambrai in November 1917.
