Herbert was born in the autumn of 1895 at Ancoats to Robert and Susannah Sidebottom, of 17, Watt Street, Church Street, Harpurhey, Manchester. In the 1901 Census he was the second of four children: Thomas, 11; Herbert, 5; Susan, 3 and Joe, 10 months born to Robert, 38 and Susannah, 35, at 45 Naylor Street, Miles Platting. Ten years later Herbert was a 15 year old plumbers apprentice and living with his parents at the same address. He is not found in the available Tech registers or the Book of Remembrance. He served on the Western Front.
