Alan was born on 16th December 1897 at Bradford to William Isaac (Cotton Spinner) and Emily Bedford of 4 Laisteridge Lane, Horton, Bradford, Yorkshire. He was educated at Ashfield High School, then Bradford Grammar School and entered Manchester University in 1914, aged 16, to study Textile Industries. He passed the 2nd year 1915-16 with 3rd Div pass and during 1916-17 joined His Majesty’s Forces. He was a member of the Manchester University Officer Training Corps from December 1915 to March 1917. Gazetted in May 1917 to 2nd 4/6th Bn. West Yorkshire Regiment, he was mentioned for gallantry in 62nd Divisional Routine Orders. He served in Gallipoli and France.
