Edward was born at Eccles in 1893 to Thomas, Secretary of the Manchester Co-operative Wholesale Society and Margaret Brodrick. He attended Manchester Grammar School and entered Manchester University in 1909. He graduated with a law degree in 1912 and was articled to Aston, Harwood and Somers Solicitors.
Edward enlisted as a private in the 20th Battalion Royal Fusiliers in September 1914 and was commissioned two months later. He served in Salonica and was invalided home, perhaps with an illness as conditions on that front were particularly poor, and once recovered transferred to the Manchester Regiment, served on the Western Front and died in July 1917 in Belgium on the first day of the Battle of Passchendaele.
