William was the son of Herbert, a dairyman, and Dora H. Johnson of Southport. He was born in 1897 and educated at Southport Commercial School. He was employed by the Royal Insurance Company, Manchester and a member of Southport Marlborough Hockey Club.
William was a member of the Officer Training Corps from February to November 1916 and was gazetted to the Loyal North Lancashire Regiment in March 1917. He was wounded on 3rd June 1917 near Ypres, Belgium and died later that month. He left effects worth £178 0s 7d to his father.
