Born in 1894 Whitworth was the son of Whitworth and Sarah Arm Billington of Bolton. He was educated at Rivington and Blackrod Grammar School, entered Manchester University in 1911 and graduated in 1915. He went on to be a research student.
Whitworth was a member of the University Officer Training Corps from October 1914 to July 1915 when he took a commission in the North Staffordshire Regiment. He was for a time attached to the York and Lancaster Regiment and was killed at Lagnicourt, France in May 1917 while with the Royal Engineers.
