Thomas was born to Rudolph, a shipping merchant, and Meta Dehn in 1884, their second son. At Manchester Grammar School (1898-1902) he was an active member of the Club Committee and made the debating society into a thriving institution. After school he went to Bailliol College, Oxford. Called to the Bar in 1907 he came to Manchester University to lecture in law in 1913 and was a barrister on the northern circuit. He was a member of the Playgoers Club and got married to Margaret, Dr. Arthur Schuster’s daughter, in 1914.
Thomas joined the Artists Rifles Officer Training Corps and was commissioned to the Wiltshire Regiment in August 1916. Sent to the front in March 1917 he was injured on 14th April at Metz en Couture while attached to the Royal Berkshire Regiment and died of his wounds a few days later at Havre.
Thomas’ mother died in 1918 and his wife remarried in 1920.
