James was born at Standish, Wigan, Lancashire on the 26th October 1890, the only son of Roger and Martha Gregory. A pupil at Manchester Grammar School he went onto study at the Victoria University, now Manchester University to study medicine. He graduated with an M.R.C.S, and a L.R.C.P.Lond. in 1914 . The war began shortly after he graduated.
James took a commission and became a Lieutenant in the Royal Army Medical Corps almost immediately and was soon serving as a Doctor with the 52nd Field Ambulance Royal Army Medical Corps, part of the 17th (New Army) Division on the Western Front. The Division was heavily involved in the Battle of the Scarpe in early April 1917 and on the 12th April mid way through the 5 day long battle he was seriously wounded. Evacuated to a Casualty Clearing Station, he died of his wounds the following day. He was 26 years old and married to Marie Gregory.
