Norman Hartley Ward was born in October 1897 at Petrograd to Thomas James Ward and his wife Emilie, of Petrograd and Northwood, Middlesex. He was educated at Wadham House, Hale, and Clifton College, Bristol. At 18 he entered Manchester University in 1915 to study Textiles. He gave his term time address as The Rectory, Cheadle, Cheshire, and his Guardian as H.C. Needham, Solicitor.
Norman joined the University Officer Training Corps in 1915, was gazetted in September 1916 and died of wounds in the Somme region of France in March 1917.
His younger brother, Harold Henshaw Ward, a navy midshipman, was killed in action at sea on 22nd September 1914 when the ship he was serving on, H.M.S. Hogue, was attacked by a submarine.
