Benjamin was born in 1889 at Rochdale, the son of Alexander Butterworth, a Postal Official, of 429 Bury Road, Rochdale. He was educated at Rochdale Parish Church School and at 21 was a Rochdale Corporation (Robinson) Exhibitioner when he entered Manchester University in 1910 to study Mechanical Engineering. Apprenticed to a Fitter, he was awarded a Certificate in Technology in 1913.
Benjamin was in the Manchester University Officer Training Corps from 1911 to 1914. That September he enlisted and was gazetted on 17th February 1915 into theManchester Regiment. He served in France before going to Mesopotamia and died near Kizil Rolat. He left effects worth £148 2s 3d to his father.
