2nd Lieutenant, 1st/7th Battalion Duke of Wellington’s (West Riding) Regiment.

Albert was born on 11th April 1896 at Milnrow to Robert Hewitt, a Gas Works Manufacturer, and Sarah H. Nutgall. He was educated at Milnrow and Marsden National School, Huddersfield High School and Huddersfield Technical College. With a West Riding Scholarship he came to Manchester University to study mechanical engineering and gained two years work experience at National Gas Turbine Co., Ashton Under Lyne. A keen swimmer and enthusiastic golfer he became a member of the University Officer Training Corps in October 1914 and left in September 1915 after gaining a commission with the Duke Of Wellington’s (West Riding) Regiment. The winter was spent training and then Albert joined his unit in France in July 1916. Whilst engaged in an attack at Thiepval he was mortally wounded and died the following day.
