Alexander was born in 1892 at Halliwell, Bolton, the son of Samuel and Ellen Clegg. He attended Derby Street Congregational School in Bolton, and in 1911 enrolled at Manchester University completing a BS.c in 1914 and a teaching certificate in 1915. On graduating he took up an assistant teacher post at Cork Grammar School, Ireland. He was a member of the University Officer Training Corps from October 1911 to June 1915 when he was gazetted 2nd Lieutenant in the 13th (Service) Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers. He was attached in France to the 15th (1st Salford Pals) Battalion when they were thrown into the turmoil of the first day of the Battle of the Somme, 1st July 1916. Unfortunately Alexander was among members of the battalion reported killed in action that day.
