Joseph was born in 1883 at Standish, Wigan to Henry and Jerusha Farrimond. He was educated at Wigan Grammar School and obtained his B.A. from Manchester University in 1906 and an M.A. a year later. He became a lecturer in history at Merchant Venturers’ Technical College, Bristol.
Joseph enlisted on 1st October 1914 and was commissioned in May 1915. He was reported wounded, missing and believed killed on 21st July 1916 near Pozieres. He left effects worth £350 18s 9d to his widow Beatrice Ellen Farrimond.
