James was born in 1899 to David and Elizabeth Bertram Donaldson of Altrincham. As a Printer with Printers Ltd, Altrincham, he registered at the Tech in 1911-12 for a 1st Year Typography Course (Machine). He served on the western front and was killed during the Battle of the Somme.
