Harry, born in 1895 at Urmston, was the only son of William, of the Manchester Education Office, and Martha Clough. He attended Urmston Council School and Manchester Grammar School and became a student teacher before joining Manchester University in 1913 to study classics. He was chairman of the Classical Society and in 1915 passed his preliminary examinations for his degree.
Harry was a member of the Junior Officer Training Corps at the grammar school and proceeded to the University Officer Training Corps in 1913. He became a Lieutenant with the Manchester Regiment in July 1915, went to France in May 1916, took part in fighting at Montauban and Trones Wood, but was killed during an attack on Guillemont on 30th July 1916.
