John was born in 1887 at Prestwich to James, a solicitor, and Alice Ann Hislop. He had a B.A. from Oriel College, Oxford, for whom he rowed, and entered Manchester in 1909 to study medicine. At the outbreak of war he was a solicitor.
John joined the University Officer Training Corps as an emergency recruit at the start of the war. He was gazetted in September 1914 and served on the Western Front, but died in Oxford in July 1916 following an operation for gastritis. He left effects worth £273 5s 4d to his father.
