Charles was born on 24th September 1889, son of John Nuttall, Justice of the Peace, and Elizabeth J. Nuttall, of Wellington House, Farnworth. He was educated at Farnworth Grammar School; Manchester Grammar School 1901-1903; and Leys School, Cambridge. He was a member of Thomas Nuttall and Sons, Farnsworth. He first attended The Tech in 1907 and as a Cotton Spinner aged 20 enrolled in 1909-10 as an Evening Student for 2nd Year Spinning Courses.
Charles enlisted at Manchester in September 1914 into 20th Battalion Royal Fusiliers. He went to France in November 1915 and was reported missing on 20th July 1916 with brother John. Charles was presumed killed, while Brother John was a Prisoner Of War. Another brother, Fred, was serving in France with the Royal Army Service Corps Motor Transport.
