Sidney was born in 1894 at Manchester, son of John and Elizabeth Fox of Glenholme, 14 Lawton Road, Heaton Chapel, Stockport. He was educated at Abbott Street School; Birley Street School; Manchester Central School, and entered Manchester University in 1912 as a student in electrical engineering with a Manchester School of Technology Scholarship. He failed his Intermediate Exams.
Sidney was a member of the Manchester University Officer Training Corps from October 1912 to September 1914, and enlisted on 4th September 1914 into 20th Battalion Royal Fusiliers.
