Edward was born in 1895 at Brough, Yorkshire, son of William H. Cass, a headmaster, of ‘Ivy Dene’, Colne. He was educated at Colne Secondary School and entered Manchester University in 1911 to study chemistry and the following year applied chemistry while apprenticed with Levinstein’s, Blackley, Manchester. The next session his entry is marked ‘Gone No Address’.
Edward was a member of the Manchester University Officer Training Corp from October 1911 to September 1913. He enlisted in September 1914 into 20th Battalion Royal Fusiliers and died on 20th July 1916 during the Battle of the Somme.
