Richard was born in 1896 at Jamaica to Bishop Augutus Westphal and his wife Georgine. He was educated at Fulneck School, near Leeds, and began studying arts at Manchester University in 1914. He was a member of the University Officer Training Corps from October 1914 to October 1915 and joined the Royal Fusiliers in September 1915. He proceeded to the Western Front in January 1916 and was killed in France in May of that year.
Richard’s older brother Benjamin, who was a graduate of Manchester University, was killed in action in April 1917.
