Matthew was born on 28th January 1890 to John, a commercial traveller, and Rosa Newell of Crumpsall, Manchester, their fourth son. He was educated at Manchester Grammar School (1900-1908) and entered Manchester University in 1912 to study Law. He was in practice as a solicitor and was a prominent member the Manchester Law Students’ Debating and Dramatic Society.
Matthew joined the University Officer Training Corps in Decemeber 1914 and was gazetted on 23rd December to the Cheshire Regiment. He went to Gallipoli in August 1915 and then Mesopotamia where he was killed in action near Kut, possibly attached to 8th Battalion at the time.
Effects worth £449 6s 7d were left to Matthew’s father.
